About Us
Learn about the Directors Guild, our history and the team behind our organization.
Bangladesh Television initiated the process of privately produced programs and dramas in 1994. Directors gradually began to join this process. Later, satellite television channels ATN Bangla, Channel i, and the then-only terrestrial channel Ekushey TV joined in purchasing and broadcasting privately produced dramas. Within a few years of its inception, the process of television drama production, sales, and broadcasting became immersed in a cycle of crises regarding various technical aspects, including the submission of dramas, delayed previews and broadcasting, logical pricing of dramas, and ad collection. An intermediary third party emerged between the production houses/directors and the television channels. As a result, directors gradually became hostages in their hands and continued to suffer financial losses. In this reality, unity among drama directors became urgent. Feeling the need to form an organization to solve these problems through collective effort, drama directors Abu Sayeed, Ananta Hira, Gazi Rakayet, Giasuddin Selim, and Mostofa Sarwar Farooki met for a casual gathering in January 2001 at 23/2 Iqbal Road, Mohammadpur. At that time, that address was the office for both Abu Sayeed and Gazi Rakayet.
In that meeting, the aforementioned five directors decided to form an organization for drama directors. The process of organizing the directors began. Later, Mamunur Rashid and Saidul Anam Tutul joined this process. Several meetings of the aforementioned seven individuals were held at the residence of the respected Mustafa Monwar in Dhanmondi. Through these meetings, contact was made with more directors, and on July 10, 2002, at 4:00 PM, directors gathered at the "Telehome" office at 103, Kakrail. Saidul Anam Tutul presided over the meeting. In that meeting, an 11-member convening committee was formed with the universally respected Mustafa Monwar as the Convener and Ananta Hira and Gazi Rakayet jointly as Member Secretaries. Other members included Belal Ahmed, Sohel Arman, and Mohammad Hossain Jemi. With the goal of forming an organization for directors, this committee organized a general meeting on August 9, 2002, at the Nilkhet Planning and Development Academy auditorium. In that general meeting, the name of the organization, "Directors Guild," was approved, and the draft constitution was ratified. A 17-member full Executive Council was approved in the meeting, nominating Mustafa Monwar as President and Saidul Anam Tutul as General Secretary. From August 9, 2002, the drama directors' organization, Directors Guild, was formally and organizationally established.
